MSM hatred by sceptics?

Post by thinksaboutit »

Many on here constantly berate the Mainstream Media, meaning all TV news channels and newspapers.

What is the reason for this?
What is the alternative?

It depends which MSM. The bbc is particularly loathesome, due to the lack of impartiality and objectivity, as well as the mandatory license fee, it's rather left wing, it is said the bbc is a big buyer of copies of the guardian, it's awful due to its programs, which I cannot watch, too formulaic. The channel oozes entitlement, also its Londoncentricity.
it has been unswerving in its faith in the government's side, since it senses it could be striped ou it's licence money. It is greedy, bloated and wasteful. And the nepotism, they have generations of the same family doing the news, attenboroughs and dimblebys, also its obsession with political correctness, minorities over represented, but unfashionable white British minorities are under represented, basically the bbc deserves to go!

The mail, though has done sterling work through lockdown. Even the Sun has come shining through.

In the UK the dominant news media is TV and since ITN was destroyed by ITV back in the late 1990's the TV news in the UK is the BBC. For almost 40 years ITN kept the BBC honest (mostly). In fact for quite a long period ITN's News At Ten easily out rated the BBC Nine O'Clock News. So although the BBC Radio 4 news dept had started going off the deep end in the early 1980's it took the BBC TV News dept another two decades to start going completely Guardian. Because ITN kept it in check.

If you had watched a BBC TV news story in the 1960 to 1980's it would have been difficult to work out the political views / newspaper reading habits of the on camera reporter and the story copy-writers. By the late 1990's there was no such difficulty. Although the on camera people were not completely from the Guardian / Independent gene pool the people behind the scenes increasing were. These positions usual being advertised in Guardian weekly media supplement. Or in-house. Which was pretty much the same.

The rule of thumb with media is, especially that which make claims to impartiality, how easy is it to tell how the reporters votes and what media they read, from the tone and content of the news-story. In which newspaper / online media outlets would I be most likely to find the equivalent coverage. Once you start doing this critical viewing the editorial slant become very obvious very quickly.

The BBC News dept has been 90% Guardian world view for the last two decades plus. The BBC Current Affairs dept is far less biased. They still produce first rate content in the old tradition but on some subject they are getting more like the News Dept. Their SARs coverage has been almost pure narrative. Saying that, it has been the BBC News Dept that has been engulfed in scandal after scandal the last ten or fifteen years and its been usually people from Current Affairs who are bough in to clean up t he mess.

So BBC TV News is pure propaganda by this stage. Pretty much Pravda and Izvestia in 1975 levels. Current Affairs can still produce factual programmes worth watching . With a critical eye.

The alternatives are sites like this who link to primary source material and dont have the political motivated editorial filters of the BBC and their ilk. The only reason to watch / read MSM media outlets is the reason why everyone in the Soviet Union read Pravda etc - to find out what they are not talking about. Because that is always the real news.

Excellent post jmc.

The BBC's partiality can be explained by its readiness to be bought as a mouthpiece for a few million bucks by political fellow travellers ( see BBC received millions from the Gates Foundation ) rather that deliver what its British licence holders pay 5 billion for.

The rest of the MSM with the exception of the Mail ( I stand to be proved wrong ) have similarly sold their impartiality
